Kok Sen Restaurant

I had visited this place a couple of times before they relocated to their current premises, and I am also a frequent patron of their branch at City Square Mall. As I was unable to make a reservation for a smaller group, I decided to arrive shortly after opening hours instead. Thankfully, we were seated immediately as the restaurant was still relatively empty, with only one occupied table at the time. I ordered some of their signature dishes - the Yong Tau Foo, Prawn Paste Chicken, and Chinese Spinach. The food arrived within 10 minutes. The Yong Tau Foo retained the familiar flavours I remembered, though the Prawn Paste Chicken was milder than expected, lacking the distinctive prawn paste aroma that usually makes the dish stand out. The Chinese Spinach was well-executed, though I felt the dish would have been even better if the salted egg had been mashed into the sauce rather than served in whole pieces. On previous visits, I had also tried dishes such as the Curry Fish Head and several of their omelettes, all of which were equally enjoyable. On a side note, I would like to extend my appreciation to the staff for their kindness and helpfulness. I arrived with a broken slipper after it gave way while I was walking to the restaurant. When I asked if they had any rubber bands, the staff went out of their way to help, even offering alternatives such as cable ties and a lighter in hopes that melting the rubber might temporarily fix the issue. Their willingness to assist left a genuinely positive impression beyond just the dining experience.

No queue but because we went at 830pm on a Wednesday night 😅 Shared among 4 pax: 1. Prawn Hor Fun - yumssss and will order again! its a lil salty cause of the prawn umami but overall it’s really flavourful and has wok hei 2. Claypot YTF - will order again! My fav is the brinjal and chillis stuffed with prawn paste. 3. Prawn rolls - will pass! Not the hei Zhou tha I’m used to. The texture is more like sotong ball kind of texture. Prefer the meaty type. 4. 3 Eggs Spinach - will order again as this is the dish that won’t go wrong anywhere 5. Sweet and Sour Pork - will order again! Right balance of sweet and sourness

Friend highly recommended this place, so decided to try it yesterday. Whenever I walk past, it's usually very busy (and very full), so I'm glad they're was a table (around 12:30 on a public holiday). Food was a tad salty, even for me. And I love my salty food. Overall, I enjoyed it. Got a veg, the big prawn hor fun, and yong Tau fu (thanks to Google reviews). Friendly aunty next table recommended a dish as well, so I might need to go back and try it out. :-)

We had our family lunch at Kok Sen Restaurant, a Michelin Bib Gourmand Cantonese zi char spot. We ordered several signatures, including golden dragon chicken, prawn paste chicken, fried roasted pork, kai lan with beef, salted egg prawn balls, bittergourd sliced fish & yong tau foo. The cooking is home style Cantonese, leaning toward the salty flavours - especially the bittergourd sliced fish, fried roasted pork & prawn paste chicken. The standout was the Golden Dragon Chicken - deboned chicken skin stuffed with prawn & cuttlefish paste, deep fried to a crispy, “QQ” chewy perfection.

Price is high for average food and mediocre service. Don't be fooled by the star. This restaurant is clearly unable to handle it's capacity, patrons r sitting outside along the shophouse corridor on fold out tables and plastic chairs, which isn't too bad, but when the sewage smell hits you everytime the wind blows it's quite yucks. My grp ordered in advance at 7:30pm, and were told many items were out of stock, and our waitress returned again to tell us our order had additional out of stock items. 8:30pm, we got our plate of seafood fried rice, quite nice, but the prawns did not taste or feel very fresh. 4/10 8:40pm, a plate of sweet/sour pork, very painfully average, the meat wasn't good but the sauce was average. 4/10 8:45pm, seafood omelette and har cheong gai. Omelette has nice crispy edges and is fluffy and yummy, unfortunately the not fresh prawns are also used for it. 6/10 Har cheong gai is very average, tastes like the kind u get from a hawker lol 5/10 8:55pm, (medium $40!!!!!!) Specialty big prawn horfun, the noodles have no wok hey, and are mushy. The sauce is yummy and the chili kick is super good, the prawns are the big kind, cut in half and easy enough to grab and pull out of the shell with chopsticks. Some of the prawns have the pooptube removed some don't so i'm not sure what the quality control in the kitchen is. These prawns taste properly fresh and good. 7/10 9:06pm, poached lettuce, does not taste very good, lettuce needs to be cooked enough to bring out it's sweetness that adds to the sauce, this lettuce is not done well, and still has a raw lettuce flavour. 4/10 We are constantly chasing after the waiting staff on dishes they've straight up forgotten. And then they tell us actually they ran out of it, after we've already ordered. If you believe it's worth it to endure for only mediocre food and high prices, go ahead. Or else just goto another singaporean chinese restaurant which maybe wont have the consistency across it's menu like this restaurant has, but you can at least get better service, and still get food that's as gd or average. Save urself and pls goto the ocbc parking lot restaurant instead.

We came here on a Saturday evening with reservations made in advance. Unfortunately we could only get an outside spot but better than no spot at all. We got the minced pork with eggplant and tofu in a pot, fried tofu, big prawn hor fun, stir fried veggies and cereal shrimp. I hear that in zi char food, cereal shrimp/chicken is a must and this was definitely a very interesting dish. The umaminess in it almost tasted like salted egg yolk. All the dishes were definitely on the saltier side and are meant to be eaten with rice. If i had to pick a dish to order it would be the hor fun but honestly that's only if i HAD to pick a dish. The food in general didn't leave an everlasting impression on me and I would not come here again. Food was overall on the saltier side and lacked that wok hey that I expected.

Kok Sen lives up to its Michelin reputation, drawing a noticeable crowd of tourists, but the wait time was manageable—we were seated within 20-30minutes ( we arrived at 6:50pm). They offer both indoor (air-conditioned) and outdoor seating, which is a nice option. ( If you come after 8 p.m., there is most probably no more queue.). For our group, we ordered the Prawn Hor Fun (small $20), Beef Hor Fun (medium $14), Cereal Prawns, a fried vegetable dish, and Sliced Fish with Bittergourd, plus 5 barley waters, totaling around $109. The Hor Fun dishes were the definite stars—incredibly smooth and executed perfectly. The Cereal Prawns were also excellent. However, a couple of items were disappointing: The fried vegetable portion we ordered was quite small, almost comically so ("pathetic," as you said), and is definitely something we'd skip next time. The Sliced Fish with Bittergourd also didn't quite hit the mark; the flavors felt separate, as if the two main ingredients were cooked individually and tossed together, lacking that essential zichar harmony. Despite these minor misses, the overall meal was satisfying, driven by the quality of their signature noodle dishes. I would certainly return for the Hor Fun.

first of all, this is not a Michelin starred restaurant. They were only "mentioned" in the Michelin guide. And to be honest, there's nothing Michelin here. First of all it gets extremely busy during lunch hour in that small place. Some of the tables are for 8-9 people, and if you're not a big group you might be sitting with somebody else that you don't know. Prices are so cheap, and so the quality. when you take a look at the kitchen from your table, you can see there's no form of hygiene in there, and there's heavy use of cheap plastic equipment. I can't review the food here because they took my order and FORGOT to bring it. after waiting for 45 minutes, I asked where the food is and they said they forgot to send it to kitchen. That was very disappointing and I had to leave because I had to catch my flight from the airport. Very upsetting experience with them.
