Kitty and I were cycling from Punggol towards Yishun this evening and decided to stop at Northpoint City for dinner. Having explored the various eateries in the basement, we were particularly drawn to this establishment as they featured “Ah Zhong Mian Xian” (阿宗麵線), a name that immediately evoked fond memories of our travels in Taiwan.
We initially wondered if this was a direct branch, but upon speaking with the staff, we discovered that the head chef had served his apprenticeship at the renowned original shop in Taiwan. He has since brought those specialised culinary techniques to Singapore, and the authenticity certainly shines through.
The service we received was exemplary. The floor staff were incredibly proactive and attentive, even going so far as to assist us in securing a suitable spot to park our bicycles. Throughout our meal, they were highly observant, promptly attending to our table for top ups and ensuring all our needs were met without us having to ask.
- Signature Mee Sua: This arrived piping hot. While Kitty found the authentic flavour of the intestines slightly overwhelming, I found them to be meticulously cleaned and well prepared. While not an exact replica of the Taiwan original, it is an impressively close tribute.
- Braised Meat Rice: A classic dish, executed beautifully with a rich, savoury finish.
- Deep Fried Sea Bass with Garlic (The Star of the Show): After noticing a neighbouring table enjoying this dish, we sought their recommendation. They insisted it was worth a try, and they were quite right. The fish was seasoned to perfection with sea salt and garlic, deep fried until wonderfully crispy. Kitty was full of praise for it and has already declared she will return specifically for this dish.
- Refreshments: The Black Sugar Winter Melon Tea was refreshing and pleasantly restrained in its sweetness. Kitty also noted that the Taro Ball Milk Tea was excellent, particularly the "QQ" chewy texture of the taro balls.
Considering the restaurant is situated within a major shopping centre, we found the pricing to be very reasonable for the quality and portions provided. It is a fantastic spot for authentic Taiwanese comfort food, paired with some of the best service we have experienced in the area. We shall certainly be returning after our future rides.
