The Blue Ginger

Disappointing food standards especially since it is a Michelin star restaurant. We came here for a celebration and walked in without a reservation, was told that they were full till 1.5hr later. Decided to pop by 30min later to try our luck and thankful that they gave us a table since it is not occupied. 5 stars for good and attentive service by all the team members! Moving on to food, beef rendang portion was small and entirely lacked the wow factor, some meats were slightly tough to chew. Chap chye was decent. Assam fish was fishy and we did not enjoy this dish at all. Otak was too coconuty and this could be us just not used to it. Chendol is mediocre and you can definitely get better desserts + with bigger portion elsewhere. We paid $140+ for 2 pax, guess it is a once in a lifetime experience and do not recommend if you are looking for really yummy and wowing peranekan food.

We held our solemnization ceremony at Blue Ginger followed by a dinner. We booked out the entire second floor, and couldn't have been more pleased with how the entire ceremony went. From the decor to the food, the experience exceeded our already high expectations. First, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Alan, the restaurant manager. Prior to the event, Alan was responsive over emails and clarified our many questions. This gave us a peace of mind in the weeks leading up to the big day. Secondly, Alan and team went above and beyond with the decoration. They were literally magicians. All we did was send softcopies of some of our photos, and on the big day itself, the photos were beautifully printed, framed, and thoughtfully displayed around the venue. Seeing our pictues placed alongside the props curated by Alan and team made the space feel warm and personal. Alan also arranged for fresh flower arrangements which added a pop of colour to the place and elevated the ambience. Finally, the food. All of our family members really loved the peranakan dishes, and had nothing but praises. They even asked us more details about booking the place for future events. The service was also immaculate, and the attentive staff ensured that our glasses were never empty. Looking back, we have absolutely no regrets choosing to celebrate our big day at Blue Ginger. We would wholeheartedly recommend it to our loved ones and friends. At this price point for an exclusive venue, it’s hard to find another place that delivers such exceptional food alongside a beautifully curated dining setting.

The food quality is generally good, but the management is disappointing. I often order the shrimp dish, which costs SGD 35 for five prawns. Unfortunately, the cleaning is poorly done—each prawn still had the full intestine intact, which was very unpleasant. When I raised this issue with the manager, Ming, he said that because the prawns are cooked with their shells on, they cannot be cleaned, and he completely disregarded my concerns. This response felt dismissive and unprofessional. Although my husband ate the prawns quickly and we ended up finishing the dish, I was still very uncomfortable and felt it was important to inform the manager on duty. Sadly, he showed little concern, which is why I’m sharing this feedback here.

After passing by The Blue Ginger multiple times during our visits to Tanjong Pagar, we finally decided to dine in today. We were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the dishes, particularly the Beef Rendang and Ayam Buah Keluak, both of which were rich in flavor and taste very nice, but would hope that the food be a bit warmer. The pricing was reasonable, and the portion sizes were just right for a satisfying meal near Tanjong Pagar. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially towards my grandparents, who had mobility issues. Their attentiveness enhanced the overall dining experience. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant for a weekday dinner.

Went to this place because I read up about their Michelin status. As a lover for Peranakan food, we ordered 8 dishes for 2 person which totalled SGD165. The food we ordered were basically chef recommendations. Food portion were small, and there wasn’t much vegetable in chap Chye but it was full of Tung Hoon. Meat in Ayam Buah Keluak and Beef Rendang were tough and the meat will be tasteless without the sauce. their kueh pie tee as it was filled with grounded shrimp. A huge disappointment for an award winning restaurant. Do remember to read the small writing about their miscellaneous charge. Achar, Small plate of sambal chilli and free flow of rice for $3 per pax (before service charge), we did not take the pickle (achar) because we do not eat that but still have to pay the whole $3 per pax. they just put it on your table without telling you. Nonetheless the staff service was good. Thats the second plus point. In my opinion, $165 can be better spent on another Peranakan dinning place with cheaper option and better food quality.

📍 Overall: 4.5/5 traditional Peranakan dishes in a cozy place, well deserved Michelin restaurant. Not sure if there's a level 2 for customers but I've seen people going upstairs through a door. Everything is great but the white rice dried very quickly while we are eating, there goes the 0.5 points. Hopefully, they can improve on the rice. Kueh Pie Tee 5/5 - great to start off with, and would want to eat more if my stomach wasn't that full. Ayam Panggang "Blue Ginger" 5/5 - must have!! Their signature dish, very delicious. Chap Chye 4/5 A little spicy but goes well with rice. Beef Rendang 4/5 I don't eat spicy but this is okay to have with rice.

The food was adequate but nothing was extremely wow. The berf rendang was a little chewy but the assam fish and prawn petai was pretty good. The chap chye was quite bland. The okra with belachan was pretty good as well - the belachan was quite flavorful. I did not feel a whole lot of enthusiasm from the waitstaff - they were prompt but were not giving much recommendations at all about the food. Honestly, this wouldn’t be a place as populated if not for the convenient location I feel. There are much better peranakan restaurants at better pricing.

I indicated in my reservation that we would be celebrating a birthday. When I arrived 3 mins earlier, they didnt have a table for me even though my details were stated clearly in their system. They told us to wait 5 mins for them to set up a small table as there were just 2 of us. The small table turned out to be a makeshift portable table with a long tablecloth in an awkward corner. The food was OK but the experience dampened right from the start. Its disappointing and I dont think this place is good for celebrating special occasions.
