Yew Tee Feng Zhen Lor Mee

Tried Yee Tee Feng Zheng Lor Mee after seeing so many people rave about it, but honestly, it didn’t give me that “oomph” at all. The gravy was very dark and slightly watery compared with traditional lor mee. It also tasted a little off to me and was pretty salty. Without any garnishing, it simply looked like a bowl of dark noodles. It only became more appetising after I added some chilli, garlic and spring onions for colour. I ordered the combo, but the fried fish was soggy and covered in a thick layer of flour, which made it rather heavy. Would I try it again? No. It just didn’t taste quite right for lor mee. This is purely my personal opinion, though. Taste is subjective, and others may enjoy it.

I was happy when I knew that I have a workshop at the Devan Nair Institute, which also happens to have a Yew Tee Feng Zhen outlet. I have been wanting to try this lor mee but the outlets are all not near to me. I reached the venue at about 12.30pm and the eatery was filled with diners. After getting a seat about 15 minutes later, I ordered the upsized Traditional Lor Mee for $7 and it comes with a drink. The gravy was of a darker shade of black as compared to most other Lor Mee I have tried but it is not gluey and lumpy. The special taste of this is the slight sweetness in the gravy which makes it unique from others who tend to be on the savory side. The bowl is filled with ingredients including braised pork belly, sliced fish cakes and of course a generous servings of their signature fried meat balls. The overall combination to which I added chili for my own preference, was gastronomic and I enjoyed my lunch thoroughly! I will surely be back to try out the other combinations they serve.

It was voted the best lor mee but, sorry, I think it is among the worst. I like that the gravy wasn’t too gooey but it lacked fragrance while yet tasted full of MSG (my mouth still felt thirsty hours after eating it). There was no elements of 卤 in this dark brown sauce. Weird that they used dory fish but at least they were well fried. The pork belly was cut too thinly. The other ingredients (eg. egg, fried meat ball?, ngo hiang?) were mediocre. Everything were served in disposables even for dine-in. Very spacious and clean sitting area though. Also, e-payment was available.

The breakfast set $5.80 with coffee, bread and half boiled egg. Coffee consider still ok, overall is acceptable.

Had the traditional Lor Mee with kway teow at 6 bucks (up size) but that's probably the market rate these days unless you're at their food centre branch. Tasted the gravy before my chili padi craving took over. Not bad, bitter sweet and more importantly not overly starchy and salty. Ingredients was a bit underwhelming for me but that's probably cos i'm the last order for the day hence the pork belly and meat balls was lesser in texture. Might give the fried fish option a try next time if I'm in the area to see how it stands against the old airport road variant.

Never tried the yew tee OG branch before so can’t compare, but overall is a decent bowl of lor mee. Just finding that the lor is darker and thicker than many other places. Price at $7.50 for the combo fried meatballs and fish and guess alright for this location . Bowl itself is small though seems like it’s nicely filled up with the noodles and ingredients so when mixing , go slow and careful as ingredients might fell out of the bowl. One of my meatball fell. Overall , is nice but not my favourite..

Located just at the institute itself, it provides great lor mee for those who want something comforting. Lor mee consistency was great and not that starchy. Ngoh hiang was over fried but complements well when soaked into the sauce. Fish cake and braised meat added dimemsions to the noodles. Condiments like chili, garlic, sambal were free flow. Sets will be cheaper ($8.50) if you need a drink to go with your food.

Ordered the Yuan Yang Lor Mee ($6 for small) + Ngoh Hiang ($1/pc) and Teh Ice ($2.20). Condiments are self-serviced so you can add based on how much you want. Lor Mee is pretty good, somehow the Lor Bak has a slight wokhey smell. Meatballs are pretty good. Ngoh hiang and fish are both alright and what you would expect. Wouldn’t mind coming by to eat if nearby.
