Ming Fa Fishball Noodles

Was our go to place for 小碗面. Been here umpteen times. Always pretty good except today. Standard dropped tremendously. Ordered usual with chilli and vinegar. Came out super sour. Both bowls. Went back to and was told that was their normal dose of vinegar. Sent one bowl back for less vinegar. And guess what? Came out looking like albino. I am suspecting they purposely reduced everything.

The limited edition squid ink bak chor mee was so yummy. The jet-black mee pok was springy and had a good bite. Coated with the squid ink, the noodles had a briny yet clean seafood taste. Mixing in the onsen egg and tobiko brought out the umami flavours to the max. The tangy vinegar cuts through the rich and savoury flavours. Do request for extra extra chilli for the spicy kick. The set is quite a steal. It came with lots of clams, medium sized fresh prawns, sliced pork, pork liver and heaps of minced pork submerged in the tasty pork broth that had a tinge of sweetness from the seafood. One tip is to take out the seafood to prevent them from being overcooked in the hot soup. Must try the fried sotong and do get the spicy option. The sotong was tender while the batter remained crunchy even after we left it for a while. The lemon mayo dip was a good touch but the fried sotong tasted as good on its own. The crunchy and savory batter somehow reminded us of the muruku snack.

The meatball in the noodle totally ruined my tooth. Ate one yesterday with a hard fragment of that who knows might not be a chipped bone but rather a broken plasticware or something, and as the last thing to expect in a meatball, it was a bite to cripple my tooth and leave a lingering ache to bite on things or spitting water of a mouth rinse. A visit to the dentist revealed a deeply fractured tooth that needs to be extracted and 3 months wait to assess if i could do implant or had to make a denture. Optimally, you dice the meatball into four quarters before putting them into your mouth. By the way, the liver is less than “medium rare” and may not be to your liking though.

As they say: the palatability of the food served also depends on the person serving it. In this case, the restaurant food has been tainted by this vile obnoxious attitude of one of the staff. He is extremely rude and our enquiry will always receive an unpleasant curt reply. His contemptuous glare seems permanently plastered on his face. Many patrons also agreed with his menacing attitude towards customers! Which is why; all of us have moved to the Indian Restaurant next door! Even on weekdays, your restaurant is empty! We have enough dealing with this repugnant and belligerent guy! Your food will taste much better without his hostile presence. I quote him saying in Chinese: “We cook it too delicious and these irritating customers keep coming back, so from now on we will make it bland and tasteless. Maybe with a bit of spittle.” I was totally astounded. NEVER AGAIN WILL WE EAT HERE!!!

Not only they have my most favorite Bak Chor Mee, they also serve a variety of hearty food such as Pork Rub Rice, Wu Xiang, etc. Very tasty neighborhood good with a reasonable price tag.

The laksa was really nice and flavorful, and the fried calamari was crispy and delicious! 🦑 The sauce was also really tasty and went perfectly with the calamari. Overall, a satisfying and enjoyable meal. Would definitely come back again! 😊

It had been years since I last ventured to the Upper Thomson area. I was introduced to this place by a friend and decided to make a weekend food trip there. Conveniently, it is located just a stone’s throw from Upper Thomson MRT station. Thankfully, there was no queue during my visit. I ordered the Mini Wok Noodles with mee tai mak as my choice of noodles. The food was served relatively quickly. As expected, the broth was flavourful and the ingredients tasted fresh. While nothing particularly stood out, it was still a pleasant and fairly standard dining experience. That said, given the distance from my home, I may not be returning anytime soon.

Really enjoyed the food here! Everything was fresh, tasty and nicely presented. The seafood soup and crispy fried seafood were especially good. Generous portions too! Will definitely come back again. 😋👍
