Soon Lee Fish Soup

Had dinner at Anchorvale Hawker Centre and decided to try Soon Lee Fish Soup 顺利鱼汤. 🐟🍲 Ordered the Teochew Style Pomfret Fish with extra fish maw 潮州鲳鱼加鱼鳔, paired with a bowl of white rice. Food was served pretty fast — got my order in about 5 minutes 👍 The fish was fresh, which is always a plus. However, the broth felt a bit bland, probably because there wasn’t enough time for the flavours to fully develop and soak into the fish. The salty vegetables helped to add some taste, but overall the flavour profile was still on the lighter side. That said, the portion size was decent for the price, making it a reasonable meal. This stall is located in a hawker centre on the 2nd floor of Anchorvale Village shopping centre, where the first floor is where the restaurants are located. It has >30 stalls and can fit 600 pax. Good ventilation given high ceilings, open layout and large High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) ceiling fans. Pricey as expected for fish soup. Quality - Pomfret soup uses golden pomfret, not white promfret (dou chang). Broth is quite thin. Pomfret/ Batang sliced fish soup $6 Grouper sliced fish soup $7 Red Grouper sliced fish soup $7 Parking - There is a MSCP right inside Anchorvale Village. Kids playground is located on Level 4 and can be reached via stairs from level 3.

First time patronising this stall in the morning when there was no queue, after seeing long queues during peak hours. Had high expectations after reading so much about Soon Lee. Ordered the Pomfret Fish Soup with Yee Mian at $6.50. Thought it was to be White Pomfret but silly me how can it be at this price. So it was the Golden Pomfret fish which was fresh and thick cut, which was great. However, the soup base was disappointing, being a very blend and slightly salted solution (I wanted to say "broth", but there wasn't even any hint of fish flavour) which had more of the Yee Mian flavour than anything else. I still finished the dish as I love Yee Mian and the fish slices were enjoyable. Perhaps I was an early customer and the flavours have not soaked into the soup yet, but I don't think I'll be having this again anytime soon. My neighbourhood fish soup stall's soup tastes much more flavourful and at $5 there with decent cuts of fish, it'll do the job of satisfying my fish soup cravings. 5 stars for the thick cut fish at Soon Lee but 1 star for the soup base. So giving 3 stars on average.

Paid $12 for a plate of grouper soup — got 10% off using the FairPrice app, which definitely made it more worth it. The soup was tasty, done in Teochew style with giam chai (salted vegetables) and tomato. The fish was super fresh, which really made the dish shine. Surprisingly, the queue was short and well-organized even during Sunday lunch time. It can get quite hot eating there under the sun, but thankfully the seating area is covered and cooled by some serious big-ass fans — makes it a lot more bearable. If you're in the area, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.

Ordered their sliced red grouper fish soup with thin rice vermicelli ($8.50). Could use CDC but using Fairprice apps enjoyed 10% discount. No fishy taste and the soup was light and seafoody. Fish meats were thick cut slices and they were sturdy and good amount in a bowl. If you want something light, you can consider this, giving it a try. Overall a decent bowl of fish soup (3.8/5). Food handlers wearing mask while preparing the food. Can be busy during the weekend lunch period. Tables were clean and the place was well ventilated with big metal ceiling fans.

Excellent fish soup where the fish truly shines. The basic batang fish is already very good with silky texture, perfect doneness and simply fresh taste. That's the big difference. And the amount of fish given is more generous than many places, with large chunks included. Soup is light but that's okay so the fish is the star. Fried fish may be prefried and not warm so take note - perhaps you are expected to dunk the nuggets into the soup. Still, get the sliced fish. It's excellent. The best around the area.

fish was obviously not fresh and had a smell. wanted to order red grouper but ended up getting regular grouper as the former was sold out. probably old left over fish that was served. extremely disappointing. fyi if you order their red grouper regular soup, they actually sneak in a few pieces pf regular grouper instead of serving you all red grouper. extremely dishonest at the price point.

Hubby & I shared a large teochew pomfret soup with added bittergourd & fish maw for dinner one evening. So yummy we “polished the whole dish off” & drank every last bit of the soup, as you can see from the before & after photos! Enough said 😋
