Song Fish Soup

Finally tried the Michelin-recognised Song Fish Soup at Clementi hawker centre. Surprisingly, there was no queue today. I ordered the large bowl with mixed fish (fried fish and sliced fish). The broth was good — light, comforting, and not overly salty. Ingredients were generous, including fried egg and bitter gourd, which added nice texture and balance. Do note that CDC vouchers aren’t accepted, but PayNow is available. The chilli comes pre-mixed with salted beans, which might not be for everyone. Personally, I found the bowl comforting and satisfying, though not something I’d consider a “must-eat” or “must-try.”

After a long day of work, this hearty, warming bowl of sliced fish soup helps to nourish the body. Boiled fish slices are fresh, firm, and mildly sweet, pairing well with the tangy orange chili sauce or soy sauce with chili padi. Options that include fried fish, fish head, fish maw, prawns, and clams can be ordered based on availability. Customers usually order a meal with a separate bowl of rice or rice noodles cooked in the soup. A larger bowl comes with thinly sliced, crunchy bitter gourd, tomatoes, lettuce leaves, and a satisfying piece of golden fried egg floss which soaks up the soup’s goodness as you eat it. Adding a dash of evaporated milk to the soup is optional, though it makes the dish more fragrant according to the stall owner. On its own, the soup already has a depth of flavour that resembles those from charcoal steamboat stalls. It is enjoyable to the last drop. Ordering is smooth and easy, and at times two queues can be seen, the right one for ordering, and the left for collection. If unsure, simply ask those in the queue to check.

My grandparents once told me to keep my tummy warm after a morning heavy downpour, and that’s what I did this morning when I visited Song Fish Soup at the Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre. Overall the stall owner served the fish soup bee Hoon with generous portions of sliced fish, along with some fresh vegetables & even bitter gourds. Soup was clear and not too salty. It is no wonder the lunch queue gradually building up and I believe most if not all had been a regular patron to this Song Fish Soup. They were accorded Michelin Star in 2024 and offer a wide range of selection including fish maw & prawn combination. Friendly stall owner and efficient in service. Perhaps I should experiment my taste buds with the rest of the menu such as that of with fish maw.

Judging this based on its michelin bib gourmand, for its taste and affordability. Soup packed harmonious notes of seafood and garlic, tasted rather clean, but ingredients were not the best tasting. Fish batter rather clumpy and peels off the meat rather easily - without being soaked. Sliced fish cutting was not evenly sliced, questioning culinery skills relative to the award Generally, I would say there would be people that love this if they do not care about the micro details, but generally, I would say you may get better if you were to spend 10-20 minutes queuing.

Don’t get the hype around this. Had better fish soup at maxwell hawker/arcade fish soup. Think it’s overhyped. But still, the non fried fish slices were fresh and tasty! The fried fish though- super cold and hard. Not good at all- so disappointing! Think it used to taste better a few years back. Now it feels like it’s just hiding behind the Michelin guide stickers which it earned a long time back. Not recommended.

queued up at 7.30pm and was lucky enough to be the second last person to be served before they close for the day. a pity that at this point they have already ran out of most ingredients - fried fish, rice, ee mian. settled for a bowl of fish soup. soup was light and refreshing, served with assorted vegetables like tofu and bitter gourd. they were also pretty generous with the fish slices, which were fresh with a firm bite. it was overall a very hearty and comforting dish.

Saw that it was awarded the Michelin bib, so went to try out of curiosity. Ordered the mixed fish soup (fried and fresh sliced fish). Soup tasted blander than I liked. The fried fish batter was also hard and unseasoned, but at least the fresh fish slices were good. Nothing else really stood out except for the egg floss. You rarely get egg floss in fish noodles so this was a pleasant surprise. Probably would visit again if I'm craving that egg floss.

I never noticed this stall until I saw that they were on the Bib Gourmand list and gave it a shot though it was near their supposed closing time of 8pm. There was still a queue at that time (and some more after me) so it seems to be very popular. Tried their fish soup + rice for $6. The fish was smooth, firm, and tasty (though the portion seems small) and the soup was tasty. It's nice but I wouldn't go for it if the queue was too long.
