I usually avoid tonkatsu because I don't like the roof of my mouth being rubbed raw, but Tonshou changed my mind. First up was a cool (literally, from the fridge) corn soup which was light and refreshing - truly different. I ordered the Jumbo Rosu Katsu Set, and you can watch it being smoked after deep frying. This process enhances the flavour, lending it a more mellow, smoky aroma. Despite it being a loin cut, the meat was thick and juicy, with a little fat on one edge. There were also lots of condiments you can experiment with, to find the taste suits you best. The set is served with a generous portion of chiffonade cabbage which you can add yuzu dressing to - I think it tastes better without. There're also rice and miso soup on the side. Almost all in my group needed a takeaway box, so portions are big - maybe don't order a jumbo or find someone to share with.

Visited: Sunday, 19 April 2026 I visited here for lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't crowded, so I was able to get a table without any waiting. I ordered the Rosu Katsu Set. • Food Rosu Katsu Set: The doneness of the meat was a bit tricky. It felt more like the texture of Gyukatsu rather than Tonkatsu. Because of this unique texture, I think people's preferences might vary. Rice: The rice was a bit disappointing. It seemed like they used a very small grain variety, but the cooking method didn't quite match the grain type. The texture needs to be improved by adjusting the water or cooking time. Appetiser: It was interesting that they served the corn soup cold. It was refreshing and a good way to start the meal. Sauces & Sides: I liked the Yuzu Kosho. The soup tasted more like Korean-style soybean paste soup (Doenjang-guk) rather than typical Japanese miso soup. It felt quite localised to Korean tastes. • Service & Atmosphere The restaurant is clean and quiet. Even though I entered without a wait, the food took a bit long time to be served. You might need some patience. • Overall Despite the slow service and the issues with the rice, I might visit one more time to try the Hire Katsu to see if it suits my taste better.

Came here with half expecting another dry and oily tonkatsu, left wondering why I hadn't found this place earlier. Meat is not oily, and still moist. And there's an interesting variety of dips that you can try (from lemon shoshu to good old beef based tonkatsu sauce).. And did I mention kimchi?? (yes this is a Korean tonkatsu shop) Even the drinks (I had a yuzu drink and ume plum drink) are thoughtfully crafted and don't seem to be "ready made". A good shop to bring a loved one and have a nice conversation, but as it's counter seating, may not be as conducive for large groups. Don't expect a variety of other dishes, as this is a tonkatsu shop (with prawn as well) And highly recommended to reserve in advance, if you wish to come at popular timings due to the limited seating.

Absolutely amazing meal. I haven’t been to Japan much, so can’t compare well but that was the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had. And all the other appetizers and sides were fresh, light and tasted great. Free flow tea and some of the sides was really great too. Huge slab of katsu fried well at good value worth the standard high price. Great cosy interior bar in central location too and the bathroom is pleasant as well, which is a rarity in smaller restaurants in my experience. Only complaint would be slow service from staff, but that’s only because there was only a few of them and they were so busy preparing everyone’s orders. Good problem to have, but hope they can hire more service staff for busy periods maybe. Otherwise experience was really perfect and would recommend to anyone who likes tonkatsu. Definitely coming back when I can. Thank you very much!

We tried the Hire Katsu and the Hokkaido Kurobuta Katsu, and both were good in their own way. The Hire Katsu was tender where you could bite through it effortlessly, with a delicate texture that practically melts in your mouth. The Hokkaido Kurobuta was richer and more flavorful with a depth that highlights the quality of the pork. What I loved most was the variety of ways to enjoy the tonkatsu. Our personal favorite was keeping it simple with just a sprinkle of salt, which really brought out the natural sweetness and flavor of the pork. The katsu sauce added a delicious extra layer of tangy richness. The curry is a must order. It adds another dimension of flavor to the katsu and we were surprised to find minced pork in the curry itself, making it hearty and satisfying. The set also came with corn soup, miso soup, and rice, making it a very complete and comforting meal. On top of the amazing food, the staff were friendly, attentive and efficient, which made the whole dining experience even better.

TLDR: bad experience, plain pork Katsu, short stuffed and bad service. The only saving grace is we did get a free drink. Had a really bad experience during Valentine’s Day dinner. Prior to the booking, we were told we had to pre-order our meal and prepay for them. We expected food to be ready when we arrive since the shop had taken our orders, but no. Not only we had to wait for 15min for our table booked for 8pm, we also had to wait another 15 min for the food to be ready. The server (whom we suspect was a chef out of his element) even allowed in another couple who came 10 min after us, before us. We were only served our food at 830pm. The black pork katsu was plain and too oily for our liking. The service was bad too. The shop is obviously short stuffed with a few inexperience stuff which was okay if it is less busy. Definitely will not visit again. Yuzu salad sauce was a bad idea.

The world’s first charcoal-grilled pork cutlets? We had to give this a try! We ordered two items labelled “BEST” on the menu: the Katsu Combo Set and the Hire Katsu Set, and topped up with an Ebi Katsu for the Hire Katsu Set. Each set came with cold corn soup (very refreshing), kimchi, cabbage, soup, and rice. Cold tea is on the house. The yuzu salad dressing for the cabbage was something new to us, as cabbage is usually paired with sesame dressing. It was delicious and a pleasant surprise! The tonkatsu sauce that accompanied the cutlets was amazingly tasty - we couldn’t get enough of it. The pork tenderloin was incredibly tender (haha, as expected), while the pork loin was slightly tougher. Just something to note when choosing based on your preference. The prawn tempura was big and juicy. We ate the entire prawn, including the head and shell - it was that good. Priced at S$34++ and S$28++ respectively, everything was well worth it. We’re big eaters, and even we were completely stuffed by the end of the meal. We didn’t ask whether any of the sides were refillable, but it would have been nice to have more cabbage or kimchi for a little extra fibre intake. Haha. Overall, no regrets at all. We’d happily come back again - and you should too!

Upon entering the restaurant, we immediately felt like dinning in Japan! Very typical of a Jap restaurant where we sit at the counter while the chefs prepare their food, fresh and on the spot, right in front of us! Very nice Jazz Music too. Ordered the Hokkaido Kurabuta Special Rosu Katsu Set and the Ebi Katsu Set. It came with a corn soup which was absolutely flavorful! The Rosu Katsu was cooked to perfection! It’s crispy on the outside, and delightfully juicy and tender to the bite! It came with several sauces, and even an instruction for enjoying the Katsu in several ways! The Ebi was large and fresh. Crispy outside and Crunchy inside. Both sets were wonderful! This is the Best Tonkatsu we had in Singapore. Highly recommended.
