Having heard plenty about Shi Le Yuan and seeing its Michelin recognition, I decided to give it a try. Overall, it's a solid plate of kway chap, though it didn't quite live up to the high expectations. The braised platter was the highlight. The pork belly was tender with a good balance of fat and lean, while the pig skin, tofu and braised egg were all well infused with the rich, savoury braising sauce. The offal was cleaned well with no unpleasant odour, making it approachable even for those who are usually hesitant. The kway itself was smooth and silky, but I found the accompanying broth slightly on the lighter side than I prefer. It complemented the braised items without being overly salty, though I would have liked a little more depth and aroma. Portion sizes were reasonable for the price, and the self-service chilli packed a nice spicy kick that paired well with the braised meats. Service was efficient despite the queue, which is understandable for a popular hawker stall. Worth visiting if you're in the area, especially if you're a fan of traditional kway chap. While I wouldn't call it the best I've had in Singapore, it's a dependable and enjoyable bowl that earns its Michelin recognition for consistency.
