Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon

This Mei Zhi Lu fish head rice noodle shop always has a long queue. I usually order the fish head rice noodles with milk broth. The broth is milky white, not heavy, but very flavorful. It's not made with MSG; it's the natural milky aroma from the fish broth being simmered for a long time. It's smooth to drink and warms the stomach with every sip. The fish head is first deep-fried, so the aroma is very noticeable when it's served. The outer layer has a slightly crispy texture from being fried, and it soaks up the broth perfectly when soaked in—it's wonderful. What surprised me most was the fish meat. I thought it would be dry after frying, but it wasn't at all. The meat was tender, falling apart with a gentle touch, retaining its fishy flavor, and had a gentle texture. The rice noodles are also a big plus—thin, smooth, and perfectly absorbing the broth. Served with chili soy sauce, the savory flavor is enhanced by a touch of spiciness, instantly elevating the taste. Conclusion: ✔️ The soup is comfortably delicious. ✔️ The fish head is incredibly fragrant. ✔️ The fish meat is tender. ✔️ You'd want another bowl. In Singapore, it's truly remarkable to make a simple yet satisfying bowl of fish head noodles. There's a reason for the queue! 🍜🐟

One of the best fish soup around, fresh and reasonably thick sliced toman fish 生鱼 (sheng yu) in tasty sweet broth. Ordered 鸳鸯(yuan yang) S$7, combination of sliced fish and fried fish pieces with bee hoon in soup. Otherwise, any one type would be just $5.50. Waited in queue ~50 mins with roughly 8 other in front of me. Reasons for the long wait due to several “regular” patrons known to the stall owner allowing express service without need for queuing. That’s rather awful to all standing in the queue looking 👀 on… Plus this stall can be closed on their stipulated operating days too, so count your very best luck!

The queue was long, and everyone in line seemed to know exactly what they were waiting for. I joined the queue, and thanks to mobile data keeping me company, the hour-long wait flew by! I ordered the fried fish with milk broth, and yuan yang with thick bee hoon (since the fish head was already sold out). The portion of fish was generous, and the soup… one of the best I’ve ever had. Rich, flavourful, and clearly a crowd favourite - every bowl I saw was completely emptied. Best of all, it seemed to have little or no MSG, as I didn’t feel thirsty afterwards. The stall is run by an elderly couple, uncle does the cooking while aunty take the orders. She was warm and friendly, which made the experience even better.

Had a great experience here — the fish soup was really nice, fresh, and comforting. The ingredients tasted fresh and the soup was flavourful without being too heavy. Portion was good too. Just note that they only accept cash payment, so remember to bring some cash along before visiting.

Ordered yuanyang. Fish slices were thick and generous but otherwise normal in taste. The star has to be the soup, extremely unami with plenty of solefish powder.
