Soon Lee Porridge

A rainy morning calls for a comforting bowl of hot, piping congee and that’s exactly what I went for. It was my first visit to this hawker centre, and being a Monday, many stalls were still closed. Soon Lee caught my eye with a small queue forming, and as any seasoned food hunter would know, the best bet at a new place is to follow the queue. I ordered the pork congee with egg. While the bowl wasn’t huge, it was certainly satisfying. What stood out was their generosity with ingredients; plenty of pork slices, liver, and juicy minced pork balls. It’s one of those truly local dishes that warms you up from the inside. The taste reminded me of a similar flavour profile from a midnight curry rice stall at Kovan, though I’d say Soon Lee’s version is definitely better. I’m giving them 5 stars for both food and service. Don’t worry about the queueing once you’ve placed your order, your congee will be brought to your table. That’s a rare touch these days, with most places being fully self-service. I waited about 20 minutes, but it was well worth it.

Hainanese porridge where the grains are still visible. This is a flavourful bowl of pork porridge, with pork balls and pork slices. The pork balls are marinated well, tasty and not gamey. The pork slices are lightly marinated without flour, so it may taste a bit coarse and dry, which I find it better than those with flour. I felt the porridge's uniqueness comes from the specks of 东菜 in the bowl, imparting an occasional umami and salty flavour. The egg when mixed in also gave it a creamy profile, the porridge serving temperature hot enough to eat, yet not hot enough to harden the egg. It gets 4 stars because I felt the 东菜 could be more plenty and sometimes the consistency of the saltiness of the bowl is not there.

Definitely the best porridge in town. I usually get the pork, mixed (meat, liver, etc), medium size, egg. $5.50 Pork balls are very well marinated, porridge has a nice subtle broth for a great taste. The egg needs to be mixed to give the consistency a good thickness as well as a good bit of creaminess. Max shiok. And the people there are very nice. And if you go there enough times, you don’t need to order. They will tell you how long the wait is, and remind you of the price. :)

My favorite porridge in clementi. Taste itself is well prepared. Porridge with pig lard and caipo added which makes it so tasty. Waiting time is a little long during peak hours, so suggest to come non peak time. Always ordered the pork porridge which comes with a variety like meat ball, sliced pork and etc. meat ball is self maid and flavorful enough.

Was told that it will be a 25min wait and ended up waiting for close to 45mins🥺 Liver was at best average and the pork slices below average by my standard. Despite it's popularity, I think it's far from my favourite porridge stall at Commonwealth Crescent hawker centre. Fact that they didn't have century egg is another point against them.

Obsessed with Soon Lee’s pork congee, tasty, tender lean pork slices, meat balls and liver. It’s that comforting flavour that just makes you feel taken care of. If you’re a congee person, this one really hits different. Be prepared to wait, as they usually have a long queue of orders.

One of the best porridge in Singapore. I’ve been eating this for so many years that I don’t remember how many. I love their pork porridge and you can also opt to add a raw egg inside. They also have chai poh added which adds a savoury and crunchy bite which I love very much. Service is also good and pragmatic. I don’t understand the other reviews who says the uncle doesn’t say thank you and then proceeds to give 1 star review. This uncle is very fast and does exactly what he is supposed to do which is to take orders and to warn you that waiting time is long. Their waiting time is always long, no matter when I go. But generally it is between 20mins to 40mins. If you sit near the store, they also have pepper and soy sauce for you to add to your porridge. And remember to tell the uncle your table number so he will serve the porridge to you once it’s ready. Overall, as long as you can wait for a while, I would recommend everyone to come try this store.
