Bao Er Cafe

Visited on a late Sunday noon. We were ordering via the kiosk & the friendly staff asked if we needed any help with ordering. The shop was quieter during that period of time. A great time to visit too, food was served within 10 minutes. Asked for extra pork lard directly w the staff and they agreed. Food wise, the prawn paste chicken was abit dry but the taste was up to expectation. The fried rice was also savoury and aromatic. For the hokkien mee, you could really taste the wok hey & for someone like me who dont rly fancy hokkien mee, this was really good. The mee didnt have heavy alkaline taste. The toast was also crispy even after it was kept for a while. Kaya & butter was right amount. The drinks are also all good! Would visit this place again!

I frequent Bao Er quite regularly and what attracted me at first was their Hokkien Mee. Now the service is sub standard. One orders drinks and food from QR code but the fried bee hoon came first without the drinks and otak. We had to return to the counter thrice to collect: 1) fried beehoon without otak 2) otak 3) Kaya toast set with drinks Staff was also seen as noticeable lack of urgency and ownership in their approach for customer service. For example, staff would tell rudely one can use QR code to order. If the mgt is looking into the reviews, please work on the quality of food too. The fried beehoon was not even lukewarm. It was insufficiently cooked with some portions remaining cold. Soft boiled eggs were also overcooked.

My friend brought me there to try their Hokkien Mee and honestly, I seldom order Hokkien Mee because it’s not easy to find one that really satisfies me. But this time, I can say this is a go-to place for Hokkien Mee! 👍 The noodles were fried nicely with a good wok hei aroma and the broth used as the gravy was flavourful without being too overwhelming. The prawns were fresh and a decent amount of pork lard was provided to add that extra fragrance to the dish. Definitely a thumbs up for this! 👍👍 One piece of advice though — better to dine in than take away. Even though they separate the gravy from the noodles for takeaway, I still feel the noodles taste much better when enjoyed freshly served. Overall, a really satisfying plate of Hokkien Mee and one I would definitely return for!

My husband bought soft boiled eggs, soft boiled eggs were good however the condiments are limited. Chinese cuisine shouldn’t there have any dark soya sauce for soft boiled eggs? Those available ones are light soya sauce and sweet dark soya sauce. Economic Bee Hoon Texture - soggy and it’s has been cut like for kids size, so cui. Taste - so sorry eat half way couldn’t take it anymore. Price overall: not worth paying for not nice and condiments totally cannot make it. Ordered one of the SIGNATURE on the menu, also doesn’t taste signature at all. Not planning to go back, saw this on the reels and recommendation, I’ve saved it but not worth going back.

Definitely overhyped we tried the toast which taste how it’s suppose to be which is great. But the hokkien mee first bite was NAH second bite was NAH UH. The pork lard was stank the gravy don’t have the slightest wok hey nor umami. we left only have taken 2 bites each. The Fried chicken: 🤯 refried and floury

RUDE RUDE RUDE SERVICE!!!!!!!!! Approached the counter staff to get hot water to heat my baby’s milk bottle. Stood there for about three minutes with three ladies at the counter. One lady was not facing me and she was busy washing the dishes. There was two other lady, one saw me waiting there but rather than helping me they were video calling their friends, laughing and chit chatting. When they finally decided to help me they seemed annoyed and unwilling to talk to me and was rude brushing me off. The rude lady (in picture) was annoyed to help me so she said it’ll cost 50c for hot water, in the hopes it would dissuade me from asking for it and her needing to serve me. I said I’ll pay no problem even though I know I’ve been here multiple times before and was never asked to pay. Service is absolutely terrible. Maybe they’ve become complacent ever since being “viral” on social media. Terrible!

If you’re a Hokkien Mee lover, this one is worth trying! Tried their Kaya Toast and Hokkien Mee at Balestier and the first thing that caught my attention was the portion - the Hokkien Mee is LEGIT MASSIVE! Definitely enough for 2 pax to share, with generous noodles, seafoods, and a satisfying wok-hei touch to it! The Kaya Toast was a nice classic, crispy toasts with a generous layer of kaya and butter. Just be prepared for a bit of a queue, especially during weekends, as their outlet is quite small with limited seating.

Finally made my way to Bao Er Café at Balestier Plaza after hearing so much about it, and I can honestly say the kaya toast lived up to the hype. The first thing that stood out was how generous they were with the kaya. Every bite was packed with it, and it literally oozed out from the toast. The kaya itself had a rich, creamy texture with a wonderful pandan fragrance that wasn’t overly sweet. What impressed me even more was the toast. It was toasted to perfection—thin, light and incredibly crispy. Even after it had cooled down, it stayed crisp, something that’s surprisingly hard to achieve. The contrast between the crunchy toast and the smooth kaya made every bite so satisfying. I have to mention that it is way much better than the established chains. I really enjoyed Bao Er’s kaya toast. The combination of the generous kaya, the perfectly toasted bread and the overall quality made it one of the best kaya toasts I have had. Definitely worth the trip if you’re a kaya toast lover.
