Basil King (Yishun)

I came by for a lunch takeaway and order Basil Chicken Extra spicy (Single egg), paid using CDC. Taste wise, well it is spicy but oddly the chicken meat was way overdone (dry and tough) and has a sourish taste; as if stale poultry had been used. The more I ate the more weird it felt, so I decided not to continue consuming lest it causes an upset stomach. What I liked? I guess it was just the egg, and if their quality is like this.. I have no confidence visiting again. As for wheelchair, location is not the most wheelchair accessible; getting to the stall was challenging as I navigate past the crowd using the narrow pathway on the side. Although there is a handicap toilet in the coffeeshop, it's often occupied by people who do not need it.

The kitchen is actually helmed by Thai chefs, which usually bodes well for the authenticity of the stir-fry. However, be prepared for the service, which can be best described as curt. The staff are very transactional and there to take your order and move on to the next person as quickly as possible. I went for the Minced Pork Pad Krapow with the quadruple yolk, mostly for the novelty, and shared it between three people (unless you’re on a massive bulk, one person probably shouldn't tackle four eggs alone). Because the quadruple yolk isn't a "standard" order, they cooked it fresh on the spot. This was a win, as the single and double yolk eggs are often pre-fried. There is nothing like a hot, crispy-edged egg to break into and it’s much better than the lukewarm ones sitting on the counter. The pork was the star. You can really taste the layers of oyster sauce, soy, and fish sauce coming through. It’s a complex, savoury profile rather than just being salty. We opted for Level 3 spiciness, which hit that sweet spot which had enough kick to keep it interesting without ruining your day. If I’m being picky, I wish the basil aroma was more pronounced. It felt a little quiet compared to the heavy savoury notes of the sauces. Also, we tried the beef version, but it didn't quite hit the same heights as the pork as it lacked that same depth of flavour and complexity.

2nd time Came again to try the beef. Imwas expecting minced beef but it was sliced beef. As usual perfect combo. Nicely down eggs and perfectly cook white rice. 1st time Super authentic basil pork rice with EGGS. Chef and order taker are Thai nationals. I ordered level 3 spicy and 3 eggs. The rice was cook to perfection. Every grain is on its own. Sometimes our usual caifan, the rice are either soggy or clumpy or harden. So this is Good. Porks taste is flavourful and right amount. Egg was fried to crispy but I wish they pour hot oil or cover the pot to make the yolks a little more cook cause there were still raw on top. At the end, it was getting a little greasy due to the amt of oil needs to cook the egg. Overall I enjoy this dish and will come back again. No point comparing to Thailand, the ingredients and rent here are expensive compared to Thailand. So I feel this price is reasonable.

I lived in Tampines. But I was at Northpoint for an errand. Took Bus 801, or bus 816, alight 7 stops later at Opp Blk 391, after alighting, continue walking straight & you'll be at this coffeeshop in the BTOs. Similar concept to Phed Mark in Bangkok. Love the yellow signboard & the plate. Totally forgot that Level 1's a non-spicy. End up we had both Level 1, Pork basil Rice with 2 eggs. And a Level 3, Beef basil rice with 2 eggs. Total came to around $19+ Pork came as minced. While beef came as slices. Level 3 spicy I think is addictively yummy. Still bearable heat. If your spice tolerance is high, I suggest going for 4. Or 5. Albeit the eggs are a little oily, but it's understandable for it to archive a raw yolk cooked white. The sauce really mixes well with the rice.

A stall in coffee shop, humid and warm on a weekday night at around 8.30pm, we ordered basil pork with two eggs ($7.90) and were eager to try the highly rated dish. It turned out disappointing. Firstly, the eggs were not freshly fried; they were cold and the surface of the yolks had emulsified. Secondly, the basil came with stems that were not chewable; I could tell the pork was also not freshly stir fry but merely heated up to serve (there were some basil that looked “greener” and some that looked darker as if they were stir fried in a previous batch. I’m not sure if it had to do with timing and they were clearing the leftovers before closing. Personally, I won’t be back.

took away the food, but was taken away by how good the basil pork tasted. the eggs were creamy and cooked evenly. but the best part was the pork and how “smoky/woky” it tasted. basil taste also not overpowering

first time order. ordered basil pork rice. no taste of wok hey. rice overly mashy even without gravy, when its soaked with gravy it become porridge. overall it tasted more like avg taiwan lu rou porridge instead of thai basil pork rice. not going to repurchase. fried egg the only thing done perfectly. i guess if u order multiple eggs option only looking good for the gram.

Patrons are incentivised to leave a review before ordering to get an upsized portion. Showing in pictures are upsized, the normal portion ($6.80) can be a little underwhelming. However, looking like the Singapore version of "Phed Mark" from Bangkok, this tastes authentic and really good for its price. Suggest to go easy on the spice, level 3 is the store's recommended level but packs a punch for a usual mala medium spice level lover, level 2 is comfortable without losing the spicy flavour. Looking forward to be back!
