Found a hidden coffee shop on the street. It seems like the coffee shop is undergoing renovation or something because it's different from the previous Google photo.. this one has a pop-up sign.. I ordered a flat white coffee, the coffee tastes good, not too strong, the aroma is good. For the pastry order, I had a blueberry pastry.. hmm, it's delicious, crunchy, warm.. the room is a bit backlit so it's a bit dark but there's light reflecting in front so it's a bit dazzling.. the service is all good

When ordering a filter coffee, I asked the barista for a recommendation and he suggested the Castillo- a co-ferment coffee, which I later learned is a technique where lower-quality beans are fermented with fruits and yeast to create flavor. This means the tasting notes on the label don't actually come from the beans themselves. I felt somewhat misled, especially given the premium price point. I'd hope the café would be more transparent about this processing method upfront. The latte was disappointing as well. I'm not a fan of their dark roast, it has an almost smoky character that doesn't appeal to me personally, though I can see it resonating with some. The ambiance is quite nice.

It was abit challenging to find this place. I’m not the best with directions but with a few turns and asking someone for help - TA-DA! I love the interior! So English bar vibes and the songs are my time haha. We ordered 1. Blueberry Danish: a good blend of the blueberry and the danish itself, sweetness level just nice, not too sweet. 2. Milopresso: looks little bit because it’s an espresso. Espresso is good but can’t quite taste the milo, abit faint 3. Hojicha Latte: smooth! Overall, nice place to chill :))

The coffee shop nailed its ambience, the decorations are on-point with the theme. While the classics like espresso, lattee were solid (likely dark roast), the experimental series was not as per expectations. The one we tried was particularly sweet with a heavy aroma of wine yeast. The staff failed to explain beforehand about what to expect and hence the disappointment. It was an okay experience overall, definitely a must-visit for the vibe but try the specialty coffee only if you're in the mood for experimentation.

Seriously good coffee. I had the Keluak Blend latte and really enjoyed it, smooth, balanced and distinctive. The ham & cheese Danish was delicious too, with a great texture and consistency. Staff were very friendly and service was excellent. This is currently a temporary location as they’ll be moving soon, but definitely worth stopping by. Great coffee, good food and genuinely warm service.

Had the pb&j latte - was blown away by the coffee flavor - intense yet pleasant. It was $10 but worth the experience

Asylum is one of those cafés that genuinely earns its premium positioning without needing to oversell itself. The heritage shophouse space along Jalan Besar has a calm, serious coffee-first atmosphere — minimal distractions, great natural light, and the best seats are easily the bar counter where you can actually watch the workflow and brewing decisions happening in real time. I’ve visited a few times now and what impressed me most is the range they manage to execute well. On one visit I had the Peru Gesha from Wilder Garcia served as an iced flash-chill pour-over — extremely floral, jasmine-forward, with that clean washed Gesha clarity where the aromatics stay sharp all the way through cooling. It was one of those cups where you immediately understand why Gesha still sits in a different tier when handled properly. On another visit I tried their Castillo Watermelon co-ferment from Jairo Arcila in Colombia. Completely different direction stylistically: more engineered fruit expression, layered sweetness, watermelon and mint notes that unfolded gradually instead of aggressively punching upfront. What stood out was that despite the experimental fermentation, the cup still stayed clean and structured rather than turning muddy or overly processed. That balance is harder to achieve than people think. The baristas clearly know their equipment deeply. During one of the conversations, the barista explained they were running SSP burrs on their grinder setup specifically because they preferred the way it handled coarse filter grinding without making the cup overly tea-like. That level of discussion immediately tells you you’re dealing with people actively tuning extraction rather than just following recipes. They were also using flat-bottom style brewers instead of a standard V60 approach, and the reasoning made sense — more even extraction, better sweetness retention, and a balance between clarity and body. What I appreciated most was that none of the technical discussion felt performative. The workflow felt calm and intentional. You could see attention being paid to brew geometry, drawdown consistency, and flavor structure rather than simply chasing trendy processing methods. Pricing sits on the higher side (around SGD 12+ for some single-origin filters), but honestly, once you taste the coffees and observe the level of execution, it becomes understandable. They roast their own coffees, rotate interesting lots frequently, and the menu spans both ultra-clean washed coffees and more adventurous experimental fermentations without losing coherence. If you’re interested in specialty coffee beyond the usual “nice latte and brunch” format — especially if you care about extraction, processing styles, grinder philosophy, and how brew geometry changes flavor presentation — Asylum is one of the more technically interesting cafés in Singapore right now.
